Anti-Tizz

Log on to the Lotus BBS and you'll find that many owners have complained of an annoying 'tizz' sound following the fitment of a sports exhaust. This became more noticable on my Elise too, the 'tizz' occuring when lifting off the accelerator and the revs dropping through 2500 RPM. During a recent service at Williams Automobiles (thanks Paul) I had the Lotus Anti-Tizz Bracket (Lotus Part Number A111E6234S, £7.52) fitted - a half hour job once the engine bay undertray is off and the car is high up on the garage car lift. You could fit the Bracket yourself but be warned that its a difficult area to get at!

Contributors to the Lotus BBS have also advised fitting spacers between the engine bay undertray and two centre mounting points. I found that there were visible signs of the handbrake cable splitter rubbing the inside of the undertray and so can recommend the remedial actions described later in this guide.

Above you can see two views of the Lotus Anti-Tizz Bracket. It secures the top of the exhaust down-pipe (where it joins the exhaust manifold) to the engine block, removing the vibration that causes the annoying 'tizz' sound.

The Bracket is fitted using two of the manifold to downpipe joining bolts, plus two additional bolts (supplied with the Bracket) to existing free threads in the engine casing. You can see these in the photograph below. Note the position of the oil filter (extreme left). Fitting the Bracket whilst the filter is removed (during a service for example) will give more room for your hands to work in.

Finally, here are photos of the Bracket fitted to my Elise 111S. It was fortunate that, in my case, the manifold to downpipe nuts unscrewed without too much difficulty (following a generous soaking of WD40). If your car is older or has been more exposed to the elements you might find these very hard to undo. Be warned!

There are several areas of improvement to help reduce vibration - simply and at minimum cost. The photograph below shows the 'Parking Brake Horseshoe Compensator' (as called in the Elise Workshop Manual). It's mounted in the centre of the car and can rub against the engine bay undertray. Also, I found that it had worn through the foam rubber strip stuck to the bottom body panel (pictured).

Remove the worn foam rubber strip and stick a couple of lengths (approx. 10cm) of sticky-back velcro in its place. Also stick a few lengths of sticky-back velcro on the undertray where the rubbing is visible (clean the surface first). The velcro used is the soft black fabric type that you get on a roll, not the rigid plastic type. I'm sure there are many alternative materials that are equally suitable to use.

For extra precaution against vibration, you can glue a washer (or two) to each 'Undertray to Park Cable Abutment'. These are the two engine bay undertray mounting brackets that are towards the centre of engine undertray. The drivers side mount is pictured right.
